Simon Bloomberg Young forgery artists have been busy, with Nelson police reporting an increase in the number of under-age drinkers trying to get into bars with altered driver’s licences. Sergeant Mal Drummond estimates that in the last month, bar door staff around Nelson caught “about a dozen” young people who had altered the birth date on their licence to gain access into bars. Mal says it has always been “an ongoing problem” but it has been worse this year, possibly because teenagers born in 1998 are changing their birth year to 1996 to try and pass as 18. “It could be that bar door staff are getting better at spotting the changes, but it’s also possibly because an eight can be easily changed to a six on the birth year. It’s an obvious opportunity for anyone aged 16.” However, Mal is warning young forgers that the conse-

his loving family, with one little addition – Ernie left just before Olive was born and came home to find her nine months old. “He’s one of those cats that has to have attention from people all the time, so he must have another family or two,” says Kirsten.
Kirsten’s sons Luke, 7, and Jude, 4, have their own theories on Ernie’s mystery disappearances, including an argument with their other cat Rudy. Kirsten says they did do some research into ways of keeping Ernie at home but none were suitable.

NEW AIRPORT: Nelson Airport will be getting a substantial makeover after the company’s board accepted the findings of an independent study that recommended replacing the existing terminal and control tower with a new ‘fit for purpose’ terminal that will meet the region’s future needs. This study included input from structural and services engineers, quantity surveyors and the lead project consultants Impact Project Management and Studio Pacific Architecture. The board’s decision was presented to Nelson Airport stakeholders last week. Nelson Airport expects to provide further details about project timing, total costs and design elements, in early 2016. POLICE INVESTIGATE ATTACK: Nelson Police are investigating an assault on a man on Thursday afternoon. The 51-year-old victim was found by members of the public shortly after 2pm near the Trafalgar Centre on Paru Paru Rd and emergency services were called. His injuries were initially thought to be serious, however he was treated and discharged from hospital later in the evening. Police are examining an address in the Wood where it is believed the assault took place and a scene guard has been in place. Police are appealing to anyone with information about the incident and anyone who saw the victim after the assault

RICHMOND BUSINESSES EVACUATED: The simple act of cleaning a grill resulted in two large retail businesses in Richmond being evacuated last Tuesday afternoon, after the steam from the grill activated a fire alarm. Staff and customers in Columbus Coffee and Kmart were evacuated at around 4pm on Tuesday, after the alarm in Columbus Coffee was activated by steam coming off a heated grill that was being cleaned. HOUSE PRICES RISE: Median house prices in Nelson and Richmond continue to rise, increasing 12 per cent in Nelson to $420,000 compared to $373,750 in August last year. The latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures show prices also rose nine per cent in Richmond over the last year, to $421,000. Sales volumes were also up across the region, with a 34 per cent increase in Nelson to 83 in August this year compared to 62 in August last year. In Richmond, 26 houses were sold in August compared to 24 in August last year. REINZ chief executive Colleen Milne says activity right across New Zealand continued to be very strong through August, with wintry conditions apparently no deterrent to sales being concluded.

No internet in The Brook for 18 months If you think nine months is a long time to wait to get internet access in your home – try 18 months. Last week, the Nelson Weekly published a story about a Richmond family who were told it would be nine months before they would have internet access in their new home near Champion Rd. Now it has been discovered that some residents in The Brook had to wait a lengthy 18 months before their internet was connected. Jennepher Ellmers, who lives on Brook St, told the Weekly that they built their house over two years ago, but only got the internet about three months ago. She says it was a problem for most people in upper part of The Brook, near the Brook Valley Motor Camp. “I was on the phone at least once a month trying to sort it out,” she says. “Spark was sympathetic and provided us with free dial-up, but even that didn’t work half the time.”

She says most residents have had to change providers to 2degrees, as they have the nearest cellphone tower.

St John is looking for “empathetic, calm, gentle and humorous” volunteers for their Friends of the Emergency Department service at Nelson Hospital. The primary function of Friends the Emergency Department is to provide comfort, information and non-clinical support to patients, and their families and friends, who are undergoing or awaiting treatment in the Nelson Hospital Emergency Department. “We are looking for men and women who are compassionate
and committed to helping people”, says the group’s team leader Colleen Jamieson. “Listening to the patients and relatives is one of the most important parts of this role, as is maintaining patient and staff confidentiality. Our volunteers are very empathetic and need to adapt to each patient or relative’s situation - this may mean being calm, gentle and or using their sense of humour”, Colleen says. Volunteers cover 16, fourhour shifts at Nelson Hospital Emergency Department each week, including weekends.
Volunteers complete a selection process and comprehensive training prior to working in the emergency department. People interested in this volunteer role are invited to attend an information evening on Thursday, September 24, at 5.30pm, at the Stoke Baptist Church at 648 Main Road, Stoke. Melrose House reopens but needs more help One of Nelson’s much-loved historic houses is open again after earthquake strengthening - but needs help from the public to fund further renovations. Melrose House is one of the last surviving “grand” homes of Nelson and is owned by Nelson City Council and managed by a charitable society, who are doing a “major push” to bring the house back up to scratch again and make it more available to the community. Board member Margot Wilson says that the biggest priority is renovating the “very dated” restrooms, which will cost $70,000 – but could easily be more. They have secured $35,000 through the Canterbury Community Trust, but need to make up the other half. The council has been approached but nothing is in place currently. The renovations need to be completed by next August before their trust money expires. “We need donations of money, fixtures, fittings, tiles or volunteer hours to help get it done,” says Margot. She describes the current restrooms as “substandard” and need to be upgraded in order for the on-site cafe to operate. Major earthquake repairs were completed just a few months ago, which involved gutting out and

Blokes open their sheds for charity
Who knew a bloke’s shed could be so interesting? The Life Education Trust’s Blokes in Sheds tour had a great response from people last Sunday say organisers, all curious to see the different collections, hobbies and businesses that local blokes use their sheds for. “The feedback we got from the punters has been really, really positive, not just from the shed where I was, but people coming through saying where they’d been,” says Life Education Trust chairperson, Michelle Fitzgerald. The 12 sheds in the tour ranged from wood David Humphries on his freshly-imported 1928 Indian Chief, and his brother work, beer brewing and steam machinery to Roger with his 1928 Model A Phaeton. Dave Humphries’ shed has been a popular attraction in the tour before, housing a collection that has been in the making for over 20 years. Dave’s passion is old Indian motorcycles, his current restoration project being a 1923 Indian. He also has an impressive collection of Corgis, the original scooter, and mopeds too. “Life Education Trust is a good thing and it’s good to see people here. It’s a good cause so why not show our stuff off,” says Dave. Money raised from the event will be going towards the charitable work that the trust does for schools, teaching them life skills from a mobile classroom including topics on nutrition, social relationships and bullying.

Appleby School Fair, Wednesday, September 9: The Appleby School Fair may not have beaten its record this year but it has still managed to raise an impressive amount for the local school. The total is not exact as there are still amounts to come in and be counted, but the school can say it has made between $41,000 and $42,000. The money raised will all go back into the school, although it hasn’t been decided what it will be used for as that is a decision normally made the following year. V8 Cruise, Tuesday, September 1: The V8 Escape Father’s Day cruise was a big success with around 50 classic cars turning up at the Brightwater Motor Inn car park. Amongst the American cars there was a 308 Ferrari (Magnum PI style), a TVR and Merc E55 sports car. The weather was fine but a cold wind prevailed. The cars left at 10.30am and headed down 88 valley and then on to Kohatu for a refreshment stop. Then they went down the Mot valley and on to the Riwaka resurgence picnic area for lunch, followed by a 25 lucky number prize draw. Special thanks to all the businesses that supplied prizes, as a total of $500.00 was raised for the rescue helicopter. Organiser Ross Hurley was greatly impressed by the number of cars that turned up and is thinking of making it an annual event.

‘Crazy’ Lego expo to be repeated Organisers of Nelson’s first Lego exhibition were overwhelmed by its success with 1765 people attending Sunday’s Brickwater Exhibition and Competition at Brightwater School. The exhibition was initially planned as a lowkey event for kids to raise funds for the Nelson Shoshin Kendo Club. But the popular appeal of Lego proved bigger than even organiser Paul Hunt expected, with Brickwater attracting hundreds of displays and entries from all over the country. “The first couple of hours were crazy,” Paul says. “We had people crammed in all the display rooms and kids playing with Lego - we didn’t expect anywhere near this many people to come.” Paul says the children’s competition was popular with the entries getting 1500 People’s Choice votes. The large scale models of the Tower Bridge, Taj Mahal and Building, and|ablinds paintChrysler | wallpaper | curtains sprawling city complete with railroad, were also popular. “The highlight was Tony’s (McNaughton) city,” Paul says. “He did a great job, although he was overwhelmed with people wanting to know all about it. “The children’s competition was impressive too and it was a really close call. There was a pirate island, working gun and guitar that were all amazing.” Paul says a group of Nelson exhibitors were now planning to form a Nelson Lego Club and make the exhibition an annual event.

Sixteen new ground crew jobs will be created in Nelson to service Jetstar planes coming to the region. The Nelson jobs are a part of the 80 new ground handling jobs that will be created across the country following Jetstar’s appointment of Aerocare to manage ground operations for its new regional services. Aerocare currently manages ground handling for Jetstar’s domestic and international flights in Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown. The expanded contract means Aerocare will also operate ground services for Jetstar in Nelson, Napier, New Plymouth
and Palmerston North. Jetstar flights between Nelson and Auckland and Napier and Auckland begin on 1 December this year. A further three routes – Palmerston North-Auckland, New Plymouth-Auckland and NelsonWellington – start on 1 February 2016. Positions include customer service agents, who will be responsible for check-in and boarding, and ramp staff, who will manage aircraft and baggage handling. Senior positions will also be available at each of the location. Grant Kerr, Jetstar Head of New Zealand, says the airline had a long-standing relationship with Aerocare.
Aerocare’s New Zealand CEO, Jason Gray, says the four regional ports will be set up from scratch with an investment of over $1.8 million in new equipment to support Jetstar’s new Q300 operation. The new regional ground handling roles in Nelson and Napier will be advertised this week with recruiting in October and training in November, ahead of first flights taking off on 1 December. The company is taking expressions of interest now on its website, www.aero care.com.au). In total, Jetstar’s new regional network will create over 150 new jobs including up to 55 pilot and 30 cabin crew roles.

Citizens Advice Bureau celebrates volunteers One of Nelson’s most trusted information providers has recently celebrated its volunteers, both old and new. The Nelson Tasman Citizens Advice Bureau has been helping local residents since 1984, and as part of their AGM on August 26th they held an awards ceremony to recognise some of their longstanding volunteers, as well as to introduce new members. “We like to acknowledge those volunteers who have been long-serving with a special certificate,” says manager Angelika Barnes. “Four volunteers received an award for five years of service, four for 10 years service, and one for 15 years service.” The awards were presented by Nick Smith and Richard Kempthorne. Angelika says they also welcomed 11 new fullyaccredited interviewers to their team, who have undergone extensive on-the-job training. “We recruit once a year, and we’ve had yet another great bunch of competent people.” The Bureau’s longest serving volunteer, Jill Kearns, has been there for 29 years, and will be celebrating 30 years service in 2016. She began volunteering in 1986 and has been the chairperson, secretary, and on

division cup final in extra time; Nelson College for Girls won the women's senior cup and Suburbs won the women's plate final. The only game remaining will be held Wednesday night at Jubilee Park, when Richmond will face Suburbs in the Tasman Trophy final.

Nelson College for Girls is the country's top underwater hockey school after their senior girls team won gold and the juniors won bronze at the national secondary champs in Auckland. The school's senior team qualified top of their section in the round robin stage and overcame a 0-1 deficit against Howick to win the semi-final 2-1. Nelson College for Girls went on to dominate the final against Trident, a team they defeated 3-2 in round-robin play, winning 2-1. It was a long overdue title for the team, and especially for coach Alex Coombs-King who has been coaching underwater hockey in Nelson for 30 years. "I coached Nelson College for Girls the last time they won a national senior title too," Alex says. "That was 21 years ago." Alex says the team played exceptionally well, including inspirational captain Jessica Sturrock. Alex
and Jessica had only just returned to Nelson after attending the world champs in Spain with the New Zealand under-23 women's team. "The girls were without a coach for the last month because I've been away with the under-23 team. They did very well training on their own." Alex's husband Warwick King was also in Spain, coaching the New Zealand under-19 team that won gold, and in Auckland where he guided the Nelson College junior boys team to a silver medal. The national championships featured the top 10 teams in the country in each of the junior and senior boys and girls competitions, and was played from September 4 to 6. The Nelson College for Girls senior team at nationals was Jessica Sturrock, Lucy Field, Anna Carrington, Emily Reilly, Hannah Pattullo, Lucy Simpson, Georgie Marriott, Tessa Timms, Molly Cattell, Sam Kunzli, Astral Ramsay-Jensen and Joey Vining.

Jacks Leanne Cook converted on the buzzer to give her team a 14 – 13 advantage at quarter time. Prices returned to the court hungry and scored three unanswered goals to take the lead. The teams traded goals and a run of three each and could not be separated at the major break. Jodi Hikuroa-Jeffrey was introduced at centre for Jacks and her presence lifted the green team to score five unanswered goals and many would have thought “here come Jacks”. With a quarter remaining, Jacks had a 40-37 lead. Prices continued with their team effort – pressuring every ball, particularly in the defensive third and treasured the possession of turnover ball. While Jacks were scoring in ones Prices were scoring in threes, until they took the final quarter 1611 and the championship 53-50. Jacks’ goal attack Leanne Cook did all that was asked of her, both through the court and in the shooting circle, while wing defence Ella Marwick nabbed a few impressive intercepts. Circle defenders Louise Monge Grassi and Anna Miles toiled throughout, however they had their work cut out trying to contain Shar and Mahina Selby-Law. While Jacks would have been disappointed with their loss, I believe they would know they were beaten by the better team on the day.

Nelson Netball’s 2015 season came to a close on Saturday with finals for all grades. With many of the games going right to the wire there were very small margins in the majority of the games. In the Premier 1 final, early predictions had Jacks OPD as a pre-game favourite after their clinical display against Richmond Glass in last week’s semi-final. However, the slate is wiped clean and anything can happen in a final. Prices Pharmacy A took “the hard road” to the final by defeating Stoke NBS 5554 last Saturday, they then accounted for Richmond Glass 45-44 in the major semifinal to book they place in the elite grade’s final. On paper, Jacks had an accurate offensive line and talented mid court with speed to burn, while Prices defensive line could be considered the best in the competition. Jacks went out to an early 7-2 lead and it looked as if they were in control, however Prices settled and began to play as a welloiled machine. The Prices line-up displayed patience from the onset, their middies played a short game which did not allow Jacks the usual opportunities for intercept ball through court. Prices Dana Wilson was in sublime form at centre (and WA in the third quarter) as she delivered beautiful feeds into her shooter, Shar Lowe. Dana’s precision feeds were match-winning - she delivered ball from range and from the circle edge. She was every shooter’s dream deliverer as she constantly provided Shar in particular with some great feeds on the base. In her MVP performance Shar was also in great form, not only did she convert 41 from 52, she shouldered a hefty workload

New mountainbike park gets worked over Henry Jaine and Suzie Wood enjoyed the superb conditions and excellent trails in the first round of the Nelson Mountainbike Club's cross country series at the new Silvan Mountainbike Park in Richmond on Sunday. Henry and Suzie won their respective men's and women's races around the trails, with Henry outsprinting the field at the start to blitz his six laps in a rapid 1hr 19min and Suzie winning the fivelap women's race in 1hr 21min 53sec. Under-17 rider Cameron Jones was the next fastest male in the field of 50 riders chasing hard on Henry's tail. Jake Stow was third and Masters 1 men rider Warren Burgess fourth after battling cramp in the final laps. Consistancy proved to be Suzie’s strength as she started a little
slower than Zoe King, but maintained good momentum as Zoe faded slightly in the final laps. Nina McVicar showed good early season form to win the senior women section ahead of Sharon Davies and Alisia Simkin. Ari Scott bought his recent top road racing success across to the dirt with some fast laps to win the boys under-15 ahead of Ivan Gordon. The 50+ men's winner Derek Milne showed he refuses to slow by the impressive speed he maintained to keep Doug Sharland and Mark Jaine at bay. Brenda Clapp’s all-round biking talent on both climbs and descents gave her the top place in Masters 2 class and third overall. Round two of this six race series will take place at Sharland's Creek in the Maitai Valley on September 27.
